Sludge samples taken at the mouths of major rivers emptying into Tokyo Bay showed a greater volume of radioactive cesium contamination than anticipated, a researcher at the University of the environmental engineering said.

Another research conducted by Kinki University’s Research Institute for Science and Technology says that the contamination poses no immediate health risk since no seafood from Tokyo Bay has seen contamination levels exceed the government-set threshold.

But close, long-term monitoring of the seabed mud is needed, as the radioactive mud will continue to flow into the bay through the rivers and the contamination will be accumulating for a long time, say over 30 years from now on, said Hideo Yamazaki, professor at the University.

This is the fact that our everyday tap water comes from these rivers.
